How to Rotate PDF Pages (Single or All)

Your scanner flipped every other page sideways. Or the accountant sent a landscape spreadsheet embedded in a portrait document. Either way, half the PDF reads normally and the other half requires tilting your head 90 degrees.

Rotating takes about 15 seconds — and the fix is permanent, not just a viewing adjustment.

Why PDF pages end up rotated wrong

Scanners are the main culprit. Most document scanners auto-detect orientation, but the detection fails regularly with pages that have minimal text, wide tables, or mixed layouts. A standard auto-feed scanner misreads orientation on roughly 1 in 10 pages.

The second common source: combining documents from different tools. A Word export produces portrait pages. An Excel export produces landscape. When someone merges them into one PDF, the orientation metadata conflicts — and some pages display rotated.

Phone-scanned documents add a third layer of chaos. Camera apps embed EXIF rotation data, but not every PDF viewer respects it. A page that looks correct on your phone might appear upside-down when opened in Adobe Reader on a desktop.

How to rotate pages in a PDF

  1. Open the PDF rotate tool and upload your document.

  2. You'll see thumbnail previews of every page. Click any page to rotate it 90° clockwise. Click again for 180°, again for 270°, and once more to return to the original orientation. For a single sideways page in a 30-page document, one click fixes it.

  3. To rotate all pages at once, use the "Rotate All" button — useful when an entire document came out of the scanner sideways.

  4. Hit process and download the corrected PDF. The rotation is baked into the file permanently — it will display correctly in every viewer, on every device.

Single page vs all pages — when to use which

Rotate single pages when the problem is isolated. A 20-page contract where page 7 is a landscape table scanned sideways. Fix that one page, leave the rest untouched.

Rotate all pages when the entire document has the wrong orientation. Common with batch-scanned documents where the auto-feed was loaded incorrectly, or phone-captured documents where every page inherited the same wrong EXIF data.

Mix and match when a document has multiple orientation issues. Some pages need 90° clockwise, others need 180°. The thumbnail preview lets you fix each page independently before processing.

The difference between viewing rotation and permanent rotation

PDF viewers like Adobe Reader and Preview let you rotate the view temporarily — but the next person who opens the file sees the original orientation. The rotation isn't saved.

A dedicated rotation tool modifies the page's internal rotation metadata and re-saves the file. Every viewer, every device, every future open shows the corrected orientation. If you're sharing the document with others, permanent rotation is the only reliable fix.

What about pages that need more than rotation?

Sometimes a page doesn't just need rotating — it needs to be removed entirely, or moved to a different position in the document.

If a page is completely unusable (blank scan, duplicate, or wrong document), delete it from the PDF rather than rotating it.

If pages are in the wrong order after scanning, reorder them in the PDF to match the intended sequence. Rotation and reordering are often done together after a large scanning job.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating a PDF page affect text quality?

No. Rotation changes the page's display angle — it doesn't re-render or recompress any content. Text, images, and vectors remain identical. The file size stays virtually the same.

Can I rotate a password-protected PDF?

Only if you have the password. Rotation requires modifying the file's internal structure, which encryption prevents. Remove the password first, rotate the pages, then re-apply protection if needed.

What's the difference between 90° and 270° rotation?

90° clockwise turns a landscape page so the right edge becomes the top. 270° clockwise (or 90° counter-clockwise) turns it so the left edge becomes the top. For a sideways-scanned portrait page, one direction will read correctly and the other will be upside-down — preview before saving.

If your pages are already sideways, rotate the PDF and the fix applies permanently across every viewer.
